Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, run in conjunction with Original Medicare.
These supplements help cover the 'gaps' left by Original Medicare. Since Original Medicare only covers 80% of your Part A and Part B expenses, the remaining 20% can be substantial, especially in the case of serious medical conditions.
Medicare Supplement plans provide coverage for copays, coinsurance and deductibles left behind by Original Medicare.
Medigap plans may cover most or all coinsurance costs for:
Inpatient hospital visits
Skilled nursing services
Hospice services
Part-time home health care
They may cover coinsurance or copay costs for Part B medical services and equipment including:
Doctors appointments
Outpatient care
Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
Lab work
There are several important advantages provided by Medigap plans including:
National Coverage - your plan will be accepted anywhere that accepts Medicare
No networks or prior authorizations - any hospital or doctor that uses Medicare can be chosen
No referrals - see specialists you want without the hassle
Medigap plans do not cover the same services Original Medicare doesn't, such as:
Dental, vision and hearing benefits
Prescription drug benefits
A stand-alone Part D plan is a great way to enhance your coverage, helping you pay for prescription drugs.
Beneficiaries with a Medigap plan can opt to add an ancillary plan for dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
There are 10 types of Medicare Supplement plans that are offered in most states.
These types of plans are named by a letter: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N.
Each letter offers a different level of coverage.
These plans are standardized and offered by private insurance companies. For each letter, the coverage levels will remain the same between each company, but will differ in premium costs.
For example, a Medigap Plan G from Company A will have the same benefits as Company B, but the cost per month of each plan may be different.
There are some differences with Medicare Supplement plan standardization in Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
