Medicare is a health insurance program with several components:
Part A: Provides coverage for inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and home health care.
Part B: Covers outpatient medical services, home health care, durable medical equipment, and preventive services.
Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offered by private companies, these plans include services covered by Parts A, B, and D.
Part D: Offers prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap): Additional insurance from private companies to help pay your share of costs in Original Medicare.
"Original Medicare" consists of Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B
Medicare Part A typically covers:
Inpatient hospital care
Skilled nursing facility services
Nursing home care (excluding custodial or long-term care)
Hospice services
Home health care
Medicare Part B provides coverage for essential outpatient services and preventive care.
Typically, Medicare Part B includes:
Outpatient medical services
Preventive care
Ambulance services
Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
Mental health care, including inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization
Outpatient prescription drugs (limited)
Clinical research
Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription medications.
Each Part D plan has a "formulary," which is a list of covered drugs. These formularies categorize drugs into various "tiers," with each tier having different price points. Generally, medications in the lower tiers are more affordable.
Many beneficiaries opt for Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans instead of Original Medicare. These plans often provide lower costs, greater flexibility, and extra coverages that Original Medicare does not offer.
